Catalina Island 50K Ultramarathon

Catalina Island 50K Ultramarathon

In early January we traveled to Catalina Island, to run a 50K ultramarathon (about 32 miles).

Catalina Island, located off the coast of Southern California, is a picturesque destination known for its stunning natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and charming small-town atmosphere. Accessible by ferry, the island offers a variety of outdoor activities, including snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking, particularly in the protected Catalina Island Conservancy.

The Pacific Ocean is chilly during the Winter months.

Our ferry arrived in Avalon, the main town on the island. Avalon features quaint shops, restaurants, and the iconic Catalina Casino, a historic cultural landmark. With its rich marine life and serene landscapes, Catalina Island is a popular getaway for those seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Holiday decorations were still up across Avalon.

The 50K starts in the dark with a steep ascent to the top of the ridge.

Most of the race had amazing views of the Catalina Island landscape and Pacific Ocean in the distance.

At mile 20 we started a 10 mile uphill climb back to the top of the island.

The last 5 miles of the race included steep downhill running. The beautiful Avalon harbor is below.

We took the ferry back to Long Beach after the race. We walked along the Long Beach Marathon course, which features landmarks commemorating every year of the race since it started in 1982.
