Huron Peak and Mount Antero
We traveled to central Colorado where Leadville, Buena Vista and the Sawatch range are located. The Sawatch range has 15 peaks above 14,000 feet and hundreds of others. We planned to climb two 14ers: Huron Peak and Mount Antero. September is one of the best months to climb mountains in Colorado. The monsoon thunderstorms are less frequent and weather is perfect.
The Aspens are spectacular in September.
We camped at Clear Creek Reservoir campground just south of Leadville. Huron Peak is in the distance.
The Colorado Mountains have dark skies. Although the core of the Milky Way is below the horizon in this shot the rest of was visible to the naked eye.

The ghost town of St. Elmo, located about 20 miles Southwest of Buena Vista. St. Elmo was founded in 1880 and has a storied history. It peaked in the 1890s with the mining boom when almost 2000 people lived there. It is now a historical site and is Colorado’s best-preserved ghost town.
Mount Antero is visible from Alpine Lake.
The most common way up Mount Antero follows a 4WD road most of the way.
The summit of Mount Antero.
Staci coming down the summit ridge. The last half mile of the Mount Antero climb is along this rocky ridge.
There were a few easy creek crossings on the Antero trail.

Camping at Cascade campground. This was a beautiful campground with a lot of trees and fairly private sites.
